The first qualifier of the IPL 2022 will be played between Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans today at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. While the winner of the match will qualify for the finals straightaway, the loser will get a second chance as it will clash against the winner of eliminator in the second qualifier.

Rajasthan Royals has performed pretty well in this season as it has won 9 matches out of the 14 that it has played and it is the only team among the four teams which have reached the play-offs that has won an IPL trophy earlier. While GT and Lucknow Super Giants are playing in the tournament for the first time, Royal Challengers Bangalore is also waiting to win its maiden IPL title.

Chennai Super Kings may not have performed well in the IPL 2022 but it is certainly one of the strongest teams of the tournament. CSK which is also the second most successful team of the league with four title wins has given platform to many youngsters to showcase their talent and skills to the whole world. Some of them even made it to the national team of the country but there were several players who didn’t get many chances to play even after getting selected in CSK. It is not that the CSK management didn’t have trust in these players but they have to form a playing squad while keeping all the factors in mind and there can be only 11 players in the playing squad including four overseas players.

Today we will tell you about 5 such players who were mostly benched by CSK but they turned out to be match-winners when they got the chance to play for other teams:

1. Thisara Perera:

The former Sri Lankan cricketer who also led his national team made his international debut in the year 2009 and in 2010, he was bought by CSK. However, Thisara Perera got to play only one match for the Chennai team as he was released by the franchise later on and he went on to play for various other franchises such as Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and Rising Pune Supergiants.

2. Andrew Tye:

The Australian cricketer represents his country in the limited overs format and he was purchased by CSK in 2015 even before he made his international debut which took place in 2016. However, he didn’t get the chance to play in the IPL till the time he was in CSK. He made his debut in the IPL 2017 for Gujarat Lions and in his debut match, he took a fifer which also included a hat-trick. In the IPL 2018, Andrew Tye played for Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) and he was the Purple cap holder as he took the most wickets (24) in the tournament. In the IPL 2022, he is a part of the new team Lucknow Super Giants as he has been signed as a replacement for Mark Wood who got injured.

3. Sai Kishore:

Sai Kishore plays for Tamil Nadu in the domestic level and he is quite popular in the domestic circuits as he was the highest wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy (2018-19) for his team. CSK bought him in the IPL 2020 auction but he got the chance to make his IPL debut in the IPL 2022 for the new IPL team Gujarat Titans. Sai Kishore is playing an important role in GT’s campaign and he is also learning a lot as he is bowling with one of the finest spinners of the present times, Rashid Khan.

4. Tim Southee:

The Kiwi cricketer made his IPL debut in the year 2011 for CSK but he got to play only 5 matches in which he could manage just 4 wickets. Due to his poor performance, the franchise released him after one season and later on, he went on to play for Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

5. George Bailey:

The former Australian cricketer was also a part of CSK and that too from 2009 till 2012 but in all these years, he played only 4 matches before being released by the franchise. In 2014, he led Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the tournament and that was the best performance of the Punjab team till date as it reached the finals under George Bailey’s leadership but failed to win it. Quite obviously, George Bailey was retained by the Punjab franchise but because of his below par performance with bat and poor captaincy, he was released by KXIP and he went on to play for Rising Pune Supergiants (now defunct).

ABD shares a great bond with the former skipper of RCB Virat Kohli and recently during a chat with Danish Sait, a TV host, stand-up comedian, actor and writer, Kohli has made a very interesting revelation which may bring smile on the faces of ardent RCB fans.

Virat Kohli states that he is missing ABD a lot, adding that he still talks to him and he also messages Kohli frequently. He further says that AB de Villiers is currently in the USA with his family and friends watching golf and he is also keeping a track of RCB. Kohli goes on to say that hopefully ABD will be with RCB in the IPL 2023 in some capacity and this statement is more than enough to make RCB fans happy.

Now ABD has opened up on this matter and he has also confirmed that he will be with RCB next year but not as a player. AB de Villiers says that he is happy as his return has been confirmed by Virat Kohli and he has heard that some matches will be played in Bengaluru next year so he would certainly like to travel to his second home and witness  Chinnaswamy stadium, Bengaluru, with crowd in full capacity. The former Proteas skipper states that though he hasn’t decided anything, he is missing RCB as well and wants to be with them next year.

As per the reports, AB de Villiers will join RCB ahead of the IPL 2023 as a mentor or a consultant but there is no doubt that his presence will give a great boost to the campaign of RCB in the tournament.

Every cricket fan is pretty excited as the play-offs of the IPL 2022 are going to start from today and very soon we will get to see the champion of the league. The four teams which have entered the play-offs are Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Among these four teams, only Rajasthan Royals has won an IPL title which it did in 2008 (inaugural edition) and all other three teams will contest for their first IPL title. In fact, it won’t be wrong to say that for GT or LSG it will be a great achievement if either of them wins the IPL title in the first year of their participation as both these teams are added in the league this year only.

Though RCB has been considered as one of the strongest teams of the league, it has never won an IPL title and despite the fact that Virat Kohli is a great cricketer, he will go down as a captain who was not able to make his team win an IPL title. His form was a matter of concern for his team but in his last league match which RCB played against GT, Kohli played a superb innings of 73runs (54 balls, 8 fours & 2 sixes).

It is quite important for each team that their openers play well if they want to win the important matches and recently the two openers of the IPL teams which have qualified for the play-offs got engaged in a funny banter.

As far as the play-offs schedule is concerned, the first qualifier will be played today (May 24) between GT and RR at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, and the winner of this match will qualify for the finals straightaway which will be played on 29^th May in Ahmedabad. The eliminator will be played tomorrow (May 25) between RCB and LSG at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. The second qualifier will be played on May 27 in Ahmedabad between the loser of the first qualifier and the winner of the eliminator and the team which will win this match will play in the finals against the winner of the first qualifier.

Chennai Super Kings had a disastrous IPL 2022 as it not only ended up at the 9^th position in the points table but its campaign was also marred by the captaincy saga. Just before the start of the tournament, Ravindra Jadeja was announced as the new skipper of the team but he soon gave up the captaincy as the team performed pretty badly under his leadership and MS Dhoni once again took the charge of CSK. Later on it was stated that Ravindra Jadeja had been ruled out of the IPL 2022 because of an injury but there were some rumours as per which things are not on good terms between the Indian all-rounder and the CSK management and the former may not figure in the team in the next season.

As CSK’s campaign came to an end, there were two things about which CSK fans are very much concerned, first whether MS Dhoni will play in the next season and second, whether he will lead the team then or not.

While MS Dhoni has made it clear that he will be playing in the next season, the air regarding the captaincy issue is not yet clear and many cricket experts and former cricketers have also shared their opinion in this matter.

Speaking on a sports show before the start of the match which was played between CSK and Rajasthan Royals, the former Aussie cricketer Matthew Hayden states that though it will be a very emotional decision for the franchise considering the fact that MS Dhoni has contributed immensely in the success of CSK yet if the individual performances are taken into consideration while appointing a skipper, MS Dhoni has no chance of leading the team.

Matthew Hayden adds that Sanju Samson has scored 300 runs at an average of 30 but his performance as a skipper is still questioned. The former Aussie cricketer says that the decision will be very emotional but he is quite clear in this regard.

However, the former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar who was also a part of the show had a disagreement with Matthew Hayden as he wanted Dhoni to continue in this role next year as well. Little Master states that being the legend that Dhoni is, the Indian cricket lovers just want to see him keep on playing as they can’t get enough of him.
