IBM CEO Claims That Indians Don’t Have Skills Needed For Employment, Here’s What She Said.
Recently, President and CEO of IBM Ginni Rometty, who happens to be their current chairperson also, made quite a controversial comment, during a company conference, related to the global issue of jobs and employment.
According to her own observation, the current set of educational institutes are not providing the right kind of system, which in turn is affecting the basic key skills in an IT employee. She addressed to the basic employment opportunities in her company as well as in the IT industry as a whole.
She stated that most Indians are not employable enough, not because they don’t have a degree but they lack the required skill sets, expected to be obtained from beyond the set educational frameworks. This similar concern was voiced by other tech leaders too.
She rightly pointed out that this is not restricted only to Indian shores but is a global concern for all. She said ‘In India, you have the same issues. Open jobs, (but) no matching skillsets.’ She also added ‘You have got to believe in a few different things that i think you believed in the past. One is to believe that skills are perhaps more important than a degree’.
Amidst the global burning issue of unemployment and job scarcity, Rometty rightly pointed out that how semi-skilled people with experience are paid less than qualified engineers, even at the entry level.
But, IT is a $180 billion industry in India alone, where according to reports, 40 lakh Indians are directly employed under it. And the most significant fact is that, more than 30% IBM employees are Indians. During this era of Al and Robotics, who will soon replace 50 lakh jobs within 2020, India lacks skilled employees to surpass a mere degree.
Rometty’s speech of concern somewhat echoes similar statement, made by Srinivas Kandula, Indian Chief Executive of Capgemini, ‘I am not very pessimistic, but it is a challenging task and i tend to believe that 60-65 percent of them are just not trainable’. Even Deepak Parekh, HDFC Chairman also pointed out that 80% of Indian engineers are not employable.
Ginni even assured that job market is not going down but skillful employees are, she added ‘ It can be that you can have folks with less than a university degree, but participate well in this industry’.
We can neither deny nor agree fully in an issue that needs more discussions and insights from experts who can provide with valuable opinions and statistics.
